Mating in the heart of the winter

Sympetrum fonscolombii

Hello again dear friends! It's been a while, but as you know winter is not best time to photograph dragonflies. Or maybe not? Yesterday (1/2/2015) I had the pleasure to spot two pairs of Red-Veined Darters in tandem position, ovipostiting in Lake Kourna, Crete. It's not that rare to see such a thing in Crete due to the calm winter. For example, although a couple of weeks ago we were facing low temperatures, these last days the temperature has started to rise, reaching yesterday a phenomenal 20C! Unfortnately however, we had a lot of African dust in the air, and in compination with the opposite sun this was the only photo I was able to achieve.

Dinner time

Platycnemis pennipes

As promised in my previous post, here are some photos of a mature male White Legged Damselfly, while eating a moth for dinner. Ferocious predators indeed! These photos were taken on 14 August 2012 at Rihios river in northern Greece. This is the only place that I meet these guys and I always enjoy a walk by this river.

White legged Damselfly

Platycnemis pennipes

Hello everybody. This is my first post in the blog and I'm really excited about it. So, I chose to start with a big smile from a female White Legged Damselfly (Platycnemis pennipes) dating back to 12 August 2011 from northern Greece. The first to pictures depict female individuals, while the third is a young male (thank you Morikan for the correction).
